Brett Murphy of ProPublica reports that “SOS Blinken has not acted upon the recommendations of a Special State Department Panel that found that several Israeli military and police units do not qualify for US arms transfers under the Leahy law due to serious human rights abuses that occurred in January 2021 in the West Bank.” The details of the violations, which are not for the faint of heart, can be read here: www.propublica.org/… Murphy finds that despite the plethora of laws which would apply, the government of Israel is treated with “deference” by US officials unlike other nations whose arms transfers were cut off due to human rights violations. This is deeply troubling since the Congress is preparing to send billions of dollars of military aid to Netanyahu’s regime. Since no action was taken on the 2021 findings, I doubt that State will overcome its “inertia” now despite the staggering death and morbidity in Gaza today.
